Create a Site- Specific Installation
For Venice Glass Week
September 14-22, 2024
MURANO - NOAH'S ARK NOW, a site-specific, Murano glass installation created by Judi Harvest and Marco Giuman, will be on view in the Murano Honey Garden at the Giorgio Giuman Glass Factory during Venice Glass Week - September 14-22, 2024. The 31 of one-of-a-kind, hand- blown glass animals will be exhibited in pairs in a wooden ark made of repurposed shipping pallets designed and built by Judi Harvest and Silvia Pasqualato. There will be a reception and special event at the Murano Honey Garden Picnic, located at Sacca Serenella, 14 on Saturday September 21st, 12-4 pm.
The goal of the NOAH’s ARK NOW is to create awareness about endangered species including Murano glass masters. Cross-pollination, migration and preservation in nature, art and life are ongoing themes in Harvest's work.
The biblical Noah's Ark intended to preserve species from extinction. The Murano Honey Garden is a successful example of sustainability, conservation and social sculpture, envisioned and created by Judi Harvest in 2013 for her exhibition DENATURED: Honeybees + Murano, a collateral exhibition for the Venice Biennale.

ABOUT GIORGIO GIUMAN
Since 1980, Giorgio Giuman and his workshop have been working in both the traditional Murano glass blowing technique, and the unique lost wax glass casting technique, combining the traditional with the innovative. Professional glassmakers, sculptors, designers and artists can freely implement their ideas in Murano glass with the support of the team. We produce projects of any scale — from highly detailed micro-casts to large scale works. Thanks to Giorgio’s long technical experience and personal and passionate experimentation with many internationally acclaimed artists, architects and designers, such as Jeff Koons, Jannis Kounellis, Gió Pomodoro, Judi Harvest, Gilberto Arrivabene, and Giovanni Rizzoli. Judi Harvest with Armani CASA, have realized their projects with us. Other designers include Pomellato and Cusi Gioielli.
ABOUT THE MURANO HONEY GARDEN
The Murano Honey Garden is the heart of Judi Harvest’s work and her largest project to date. Now in its 11th year, the Honey Garden is a conceptual and living work of art, a permanent installation on a forgotten field, approximately 3000 square feet (250 square meters) attached to the glass factory of Master Giorgio Giuman on the island of Sacca Serenella.
Harvest began the Honey Garden project in March, 2013 on the grounds which were covered in broken glass and sandy soil as a part of her exhibition DENATURED: Honeybees + Murano. Harvest became a beekeeper in 2006 in New York City and researched the types of plants honeybees enjoy and pollinate. After sourcing and purchasing 6 boat loads of new, healthy soil, she planted 500 flowering plants and 30 types of fruit trees including cherry, peach, plum, pomegranate and olive trees in the Murano Honey Garden. Also the pollinators favorite aromatic plants including rosemary, lavender, jasmine, sage, thyme, roses and wisteria. Her intention was to create an environment fit for honeybees and other pollinators with a combination of flowers for all seasons.
In April, 2013, she installed 4 functioning honeybee colonies in wooden, hand painted colorful hives in the Honey Garden. Honeybees create beauty by pollinating flowers, trees and more than 350,000 crops on which our lives depend. Honeybees are an endangered species. They are doing very well in Murano and each year produce approximately 80-100 kilos of honey which is harvested and sold to help support the honeybees and the Honey Garden. The Murano Honey is served at The Gritti Palace Hotel. An additional 50% of the honey remains in the hive as food for the bees. Every year since 2013, Judi Harvest cultivates and cares for the Honey Garden and the honeybees. She is joined by Luca Polo, beekeeper with whom she has collaborated for over nine years.
